FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE: APRIL 29, 2022
The athletic department at Temple Academy is pleased to announce the return of Scott Corey as Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Basketball team. Coach Corey is a godly man who brings great experience and leadership to the program.
Scott took his first coaching gig back in 1980, where he slowly climbed the ranks in the Maine basketball world. After coaching the JV girls at Erskine Academy for 6 years, he took the reins of the varsity girls program, in which he was at the helm for 19 years. He put together many strong years in that stretch, most notably the 2008 season in which he was named Coach of the Year by the Morning Sentinel, Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference-Class B, and Maine Association of Basketball Coaches. He coached in the Maine McDonald’s All-Star Game in 2008 and 2020.
Following his tenure at Erskine, C
oach Corey took lead of the boys program at Temple in the winter of 2018. In his first year, Scott compiled a record of 13-5 and led the team to a Southern Maine Regional Final appearance. After losing many key players, he followed up with an 8-10 record and a semi-final appearance in his second season. While the on-court success was great, more importantly, Scott helped turn around the culture of the boys basketball program.
The Athletic Director at Temple Academy, Carrington Miller, is excited for the transition. “This is a huge step for our basketball program. Coach Corey departed from Temple Academy two years ago, knowing he needed to step down but not truly feeling like he was finished here. God has been at work in those years and has made it clear that Scott should be in this position. I know Scott will provide the highest level of integrity and character that we can find. Not only does Scott know his basketball Xs and Os, but he also has a passion for discipling young men into their God-given purpose, which is exactly what we strive to do at Temple Academy. This is simply an opportunity that we could not turn down. I look forward to seeing the growth of our program with Coach Corey at the helm.”
Coach Corey is looking forward to the opportunity. He’s taking over a young team who went 1-15 last year under the leadership of Coach Miller. “The opportunity to coach boys basketball at Temple Academy is a privilege that goes beyond words. Having coached there for a brief time a few years ago, I am excited about the chance to return. Temple Academy encourages doing all things to the Glory of Jesus Christ. This, along with being given the liberty to invest in the spiritual life of the players as well as helping them reach their potential, as a team, in the game of basketball, is a win/win for me.”
Coach Corey will get right to work by putting together a summer program for the team.
